Throughout art’s long history there have been many different mediums used by artists from charcoal cave drawings to oil paintings on canvas. Not to long ago came the advent of digital painting using software like Photoshop and Corel Painter. The latest in digital evolution is the mobile studio. Artist can now paint or draw on the go with some fantastic applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch like Brushes, Layers, Inspire or Colors - just to name a few. It’s like having an easel, paint and brushes right in your pocket.
I’ve rounded up 32 amazing digital paintings that were all painted on an iPhone or iPod Touch. These great artists are leading the way in mobile art with some fantastic creations. It’s hard to believe that some of these paintings were made on an iPhone or iPod Touch. Click on the pictures or artist’s names to visit their portfolios.

Spec work (speculative work) is work done without the guarantee of pay for your efforts. Essentially, the premise is that if the client likes the design you come up with, then they will pay you for it. Spec work is a topic in the design industry that often evokes passionate responses from both side of the argument. Opponents of the practice claim it devalues the work of the design community as a whole while proponents say it gives otherwise unknown designers a chance for exposure and a quick springboard into the business. Let’s take a look at a few of each sides arguments and then hear what six top designers think.

I’m back with more freebie vectors. This time I have some free vector tree silhouettes for you to add to your toolbox. As always I’d love to see what you create with these freebies so join the digital-artist-toolbox Flickr group and share some of your work with us.

It’s time for another artist interview here at digital-artist-toolbox and this time the graphic designer is Jens Sjobergh. Jens is an extremely talented designer who has done work for Sony, UNICEF, Universal Studios, Warner Bros and many more. He has quite an impressive portfolio that is sure to dazzle and inspire you. I love how many of Jens’ designs incorporate a striking contrast between hard grungy textures and soft cosmic glows. One fact I find most inspiring is that he is self-taught with no formal training in the classical arts, reminding us that it’s not about papers and pedigree but imagination and hard work.
